A petition is going protesting the impending deportation of asylum seeker Sid Ahmed Haddouche and his family.
Sid is a former police officer from Remchi, an Algerian bordertown close to Morocco. In 2013, Sid and his colleague arrested a member of AIS (Islamic Salvation Army), known as the “fighting wing” of the Islamic Salvation Front.
Following the arrest, AIS murdered Sid’s colleague and set their sights on Sid, forcing him to flee for a full year before returning to Algeria to collect his wife and four children and seek asylum in Iceland.
Sid fears that should he and his family be forced to return to Algeria, he may be killed. AIS murdered 7 military officers in February alone.
The Directorate of Immigration plan to deport Sid and his family to Spain as that was their point of entry into Europe, but Sid fears that since Spain is especially reluctant to grant asylum to citizens of neighbouring countries in Northern Africa, his family will eventually be forced back to Algeria.
At time of writing the petition was only 108 signatures short of the 1000 goal. To sign it, you can visit Sid’s Change.org page.
