Björk Digital—the acclaimed exhibition of virtual reality videos for songs from Björk’s last album, ‘Vulnicura’—is set to debut in Iceland this November at Harpa.
The exhibition premiered in Sydney, and toured to Tokyo, London and Montreal, with a new video being added each time. It invites viewers, who pass through as a group in timed slots, to don VR headsets that offer a different environment for each song, whether on a beach, in an abstract digital space, or even inside the singers mouth. Björk appears as different virtual avatars, whether multiplying to sing to the viewer from several directions at once, or growing into a huge figure made from points of coloured light.
Speaking to Guardian Australia, Björk said: “The older I get, the more I understand what is special about how we experience music. It’s either one-on-one, or thousands of people at a festival where you lose yourself… Virtual reality is a natural continuity of that. It has a lot of intimacy. As a musician, to be intimate is really important. If you want to express certain details, it’s an opportunity to do that. It’s no coincidence that the porn industry has embraced virtual reality. The penetration is really intimate. It’s a really exciting to place to be.”
Ticket sales for Björk Digital begin on Thursday October 20th at 10am. Check the Harpa website for more details, and check back soon for a new in-depth interview with Björk ahead of our special edition Iceland Airwaves magazine.
