Don’t let the cold, rainy weather fool you – it really is still summer in Iceland.
“All talk about summer being over is completely untimely,” meteorologist Teitur Arason told MBL. “It isn’t over at all. August is clearly a summer month.”
After being positively spoiled for much of the summer by clear skies, warm temperatures and light winds, Icelanders have been grumbling about the recent spate of cooler temperatures, stronger winds, and rainy weather – conditions that are usually par for the course in Iceland.
In fact, Teitur says, we haven’t even gotten the best Icelandic summers can offer.
“We haven’t reached 25°C,” he said. “That actually hasn’t happened since 2013, but we hope that we won’t have one more summer pass by without [these temperatures]. It could still happen.”
In the meantime, the weather forecast for the weekend will be cloudy and/or rainy in much of the country, but temperatures are not expected to be especially low, nor will winds reach storm levels. As such, what we’ll be experiencing this weekend might be considered a “typical” Icelandic summer.
