A tiny east Iceland village has found itself once again in the grips of a gold rush, as explorations for the mineral have begun there once more.
RÚV reports that the company Iceland Resources has a five-year permit from the National Energy Authority to investigate an area of nearly 600 square kilometres around Vopnafjörður, in northeast Iceland. So far their findings have been somewhat promising, Iceland Resources CEO Vilhjálmur Þór Vilhjálmsson told reporters.
If Vilhjálmur sounds familiar to you, it should. As we reported in 2014, Vilhjálmur was then the managing director of a company called North Atlantic Mining Associates Ltd that was at the time searching for gold in Iceland.
This is not the first time Vopnafjörður has been the scene of a gold rush. The mineral was repeatedly sought after in the area through much of the 90s. However, there has as yet not been found any substantial veins of gold in Iceland.
