As electro-quartet Sykur slowly marshall their forces for their long-awaited new album, one of the band’s mainstays, Kristján Eldjárn, has been quietly working on solo material, under the name KRELD. The first material to emerge is a beautiful, simmering track called ‘Way Low’, featuring the hushed, distinctive voice of Jófríður Ákadóttir.
“I wanted to make something different from my existing projects,” says Kristján. “I actually set out to do an RnB song, just to step further out of my comfort zone, but as it started taking shape it developed into a melancholy piece of electronica. Initially, I intended this project to be more of a personal creative outlet rather than something I would want to share, but as I showed it to my friends and colleagues in the Icelandic music scene, the feedback I received convinced me otherwise. One of the people I showed it to was Jófríður, who convinced me the song would work better as a duet and offered to complement my vocals with hers.”
The video is a result of a collaboration between London-based photographer Magnús Andersen and Kristján, and was recorded entirely underwater in a swimming pool. “It was recorded in the dead of night in -7°C,” says Krisján, “so this was no small feat on behalf of the dancers and the film crew!”
