The Minister for the Environment is reportedly “concerned” about the sale of land near the site of natural wonder.
While it has been widely reported that Jökulsárlón is “for sale”, this is not exactly true – rather, a plot of land that includes the eastern bank of the delta has been put on the open market.
The matter is nonetheless of great concern to many Icelanders, amongst them Minister for the Environment Sigrún Magnúsdóttir. Vísir reports that she met with government officials to explain her ministry’s point of view on the subject.
“This is one of our most precious pearls, and one is of course concerned about rescuing that pearl, and getting it into a safe place,” she told reporters.
Both the Icelandic Environment Association and at least two Progressive MPs, the party to which Sigrún belongs, have called upon the government to step in and block the sale.
Sigrún said that no formal decision has yet been taken on the matter.
