Downtown Reykjavík now has a new special addition that hearkens back to the good old days, albeit unintentionally.
Numerous pedestrians in downtown Reykjavík contacted RÚV, reporting an awful stench coming from an open pit at the corner of Lækjargata and Vonarstræti. The culprit, it turns out, can be found at the pit’s bottom – open sewage.
The City of Reykjavík responded to reporters by pointing out that fixing the problem is the responsibility of the contractors who dug the pit in the first place. City officials are reportedly taking a closer look at the problem.
Archaeological findings have been discovered at the plot, with items dating to the late 19th and early 20th century found buried under the earth. It is expected that this problem will be resolved before the integrity of the site is compromised, and before too many Reykjavík residents are overcome by the odour permeating from the pit.
