Save the Children in Iceland is encouraging people to donate their unused bikes to children and young people in need.
RÚV reports that the collection kicked off at Sorpa yesterday. Reykjavík Mayor Dagur B. Eggertsson arrived by bike to the location, and donated his bicycle to the cause.
The campaign will be ongoing throughout the month of April. To participate, those interested can bring their bike to any of Sorpa’s many locations in the capital area.
“We encourage the public to take a look in their garages and check if they have a bike that they’re not using and could possibly be recycled,” Save the Children project manager Þóra Jónsdóttir told reporters. “To repeat its use for children who are contending with living conditions inferior to that which we’re used to.”
This will mark the fifth time Save the Children conducts a bike drive. All told, they have collected some 700 bicycles for children in need in Iceland.
