After numerous complaints from parents, the principal of a secondary school in Reykjavík has forbidden vaping on school property.
RÚV reports that Menntaskólinn við Hamrahlíð, a secondary school for students aged 16 to 20, has banned the use of e-cigarettes. Principal Lárus H. Bjarnason announced the change in policy in a letter to students and their parents.
The letter contends that numerous complaints have come in over vaping in school, explaining that the vapor from e-cigarettes contains nicotine. The letter adds further that second-hand vapor is dangerous – a position that, while inconclusive, is bearing some evidence in early testing.
“We have received a few comments that someone was [vaping] indoors and causing trouble,” he said. “There are examples of it causing problems for students with allergies. It’s more difficult to catch someone using this than a cigarette. No one smokes indoors anymore, and it’s easier to hide an e-cigarette if an adult shows up.”
As such, vaping will no longer be permitted in the school. Students who want to use them must now go outside with smokers.
