Capital area bus patrons can breathe a little easier, as the City of Reykjavík has announced Hlemmur will remains open for a while longer.
The city of Rekjyavík has announced that the Hlemmur Bus Terminal will stay open, even as plans are already underway to turn the building into a food market.
The food market is to open this summer, and renovation of the building is to begin in April. In preparation, ticket sales have already moved to the 10/11 grocery store across the street, Vísir reports, and both the passport photo service and the shop at Hlemmur is to move out.
The city took over Hlemmur on January 1, and the initial plans were for the building to close altogether in the new year. The building staying open will probably come as a relief to regular bus users, but readers should bear in mind that Hlemmur is no longer open for as long as the buses run – rather, it closes at 19:00 on weekdays and at 16:00 on weekends.
