The presumed mastermind behind a daylight jewelry store robbery in Hafnarfjörður last October has confessed to his part in the crime.
Vísir reports that the 26-year-old man is in police custody, and will remain there until at least January 1. While initially denying any involvement with the robbery of the Gullsmiðjan jewelry store, it is reported he confessed to his part on November 30.
The suspect reportedly was one of two who went into the jewelry store and threatened employees with an axe, stealing an untold amount of jewelry. The suspect later fled in a jeep to Grindavík, where he was awaited by a third accomplice. The 26-year-old is said to have owed the third accomplice a considerable sum of money, and hoped the earnings from the robbery could pay off the debt. To date, very little of the jewelry has been recovered.
As reported, as police closed in, the suspect attempted to flee, and reportedly fired shots from an airgun – both into the sky and at the police. He later discarded the gun as he ran, but was soon overtaken and arrested.
He will remain in custody until he stands trial.
