Pirate Party MP, Birgitta Jónsdóttir, has convinced an entity within the hacktivist group Anonymous to stop their cyberattacks on Icelandic government websites, reports DV.
As reported last week, Anonymous launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack in their #OpWhales campaign against Icelandic whaling which effectively shut down every government ministry’s website, with the exception of the Ministry of Welfare, for about 13 hours.
“Anon is a number of different entities that don’t know one another internally,” wrote Birgitta on Facebook. “I managed to convince the animal welfare group to stop their attacks on Iceland via a twitter chat the other day by telling them that their actions would have the opposite effect to what they wanted. And it looks like they saw the reasons for that argument.”
Additional websites that the group took down include news site mbl.is and visiticeland.com.
Recently the Grapevine did a feature on Iceland’s Pirate Party which has for the last 10 months polled as the leading political party in the country. Thirty-three per cent of Icelanders would vote for the Pirate Party if elections were held today.
