The weather in south Iceland this afternoon and evening will be keeping all sensible people indoors, as winds reach speeds that render travel very unsafe.
According to the latest forecasts from the Icelandic Met Office, wind speeds across the country will be hovering around the 20m/s mark through the afternoon and early evening.
However, wind speeds in south Iceland – as can be seen in the above map – will be even worse. Violent storms with winds from 30m/s up to 50m/s can be expected until at least 20:00 tonight. In fact, Vísir reports that the Route 1 highway has been closed from Markarfljót to Breiðamerkurlón.
The winds, along with the heaviest snowfall for December since 1937, have also contributed to significant risk of avalanches, Vísir reports, in north Iceland and the Westfjords.
This being the case, readers should take this as their cue to try tackling that final boss fight in that video game they started playing months ago. Or basically anything that does not involve getting in a car and driving very far.
