A Syrian refugee on his way to Iceland was arrested in the Faroe Islands for stowing away on the Norræna ferry, and will be sent back to Denmark.
Stundin reports that the refugee, a man about 20 years old, had set off from Hirtshals, Denmark on a ferry intended to go to Iceland. He was found on board and taken into police custody at the Faroe Islands.
Police confirmed that the man will remain in police custody until the ferry stops at the islands on its return trip. At that time, the man will be placed on board and sent back to Denmark.
Faroese media outlet Portal spoke to Rúni Poulsen, the director of Smyril Line, who said there has been an increase in passengers on the Norræna ferry, and some of them are refugees. None of them intend to stop in the Faroes, though, but rather hope to get to Iceland.
Rúni did not say how many refugees have been caught stowing away on the ferry on their way to Iceland, nor did Faroese police give an estimated number. Icelandic police have not yet reported arresting any Syrian refugees who arrived by ferry to Iceland.
