A large swath of downtown Reykjavík will closed to car traffic during this weekend’s Culture Night, but buses will drive later, and for free.

As with every year, summer in Reykjavík comes to a semi-official close with Culture Night, a day of festivities celebrating the city’s art and music, culminating in a fireworks display by the harbour. In order to make the best use of the downtown area for this celebration, a substantial portion of downtown is going to be closed to car traffic.

The streets wherein no cars will be permitted are marked pink in the above map, and these closures will be in effect from 7:00 to 23:30 this Saturday.

At the same time, there are numerous parking garages around this demarcated area, replete with parking spaces for the disabled at Hallgrímskirkja. Most of all, though, is that the city bus service will be running free of charge throughout the day. In addition, many buses will be running later into the night – until 1:00 to be exact, giving you plenty of time to check out the fireworks display, which commences at 23:10.
