Lonely Planet has just released their Ultimate Travelist, and the starkly beautiful glacial lake has once again earned accolades.
The list, released today, is compiled by “Lonely Planet’s team of travel experts and authors on the ground [who] rated the world’s best mega-sights and hidden gems, bringing together this beautiful new book and what they believe to be the 500 best places to visit in the world,” an announcement to the press reads.
With 500 possible places in the world to contend with, Jökulsárlón coming in at #63 is impressive – and it isn’t even the only place in Iceland to make the list. Other Icelandic places that made the cut are The Blue Lagoon (#93), Vatnajökull National Park (#145), Gullfoss (#176), Borgarfjörður Eystri and Seyðisfjörður (#211), Silfra (#250), Snæfellsnes (#351) and Geysir (#359).
The undisputed world champion, however, was Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex.
“We are so excited about Lonely Planet’s Ultimate Travelist,” Tom Hall, Editorial Director of Lonely Planet, said. “This book has been years in the making and brings together the most compelling places in the world according to our team of globetrotting travel experts. Every traveller has got a list of places they simply have to see – places heard about, read about or dreamed about. Of course, what makes somewhere special is different for everyone and we’d love to hear about other people’s top spots. But this is our definitive list. And one we hope will inspire many other travel wishlists.”
