Plans are underway to open an experimental Björk amusement park in Hljómskálagarðurinn.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Cultural Affairs the park will be a joint venture between the Icelandic government and a number of corporate sponsors such as Icelandair, Hertz Car Rental and Sláturfélag Suðurlands.
“Klaus Biesenbach, the mastermind behind the MoMA Björk retrospective has agreed to come on board to help curate and design the park,” reads the press release from the Ministry. “And the current MoMA exhibit itself will be transported and installed in Hljómskálagarðurinn when its run ends in New York.”
“What we’re hoping for with Björk Park – we’re still working on a name – is an immersive audio and visual experience,” Biesenbach, told the Grapevine in an exclusive interview. “A revolution, both in terms of artistry and technology.”
Critics are already speaking out against the idea, worried about the Disneyfication of Björk’s career and Iceland’s tourism industry.
“I’m not sure what they are trying to achieve here,” said Icelandic Art Critic Dagur Arngrímsson. “Björk’s music is a national treasure and we should respect that not exploit it. I’m all for embracing pop culture and I understand there is money to be made with an idea like this but I’m worried that a roller coaster inspired by the emotional roller coaster of Björk’s latest album Vulnicura and a Hidden Place Haunted House might cheapen the art a bit.”
