The Police Chief of Norðurland Eystra has decided to lift the closure of Jökulsárgljúfur, north of Route 1, meaning travellers can visit Dettifoss.
RÚV reports that the move to reopen access to Jökulsárgljúfur comes as a result of the eruption at Holuhraun ending and the decrease in seismic activity at Bárðarbunga.
Despite this, Iceland’s Civic Protection has asked people to remain vigilant and careful, to try and keep a safe distance from the waterfall and Jökulsárgljúfur canyon and to keep their visits short.
The closure around Holuhraun stands and a decision on whether or not the area will be opened to tourists will be made next week.
