New aearial measurements from Loftmyndir ehf. show that Iceland’s landmass is smaller than previously thought, reports Viðskiptablaðið.
Iceland is currently 102.775 km2, but according to the National Land Survey of Iceland prior measurements estimated the size at 103.000 km2.
Additionally, these measurements indicate that the length of Iceland’s shore is approximately 6542.4 km and the centre of the country has been moved to 64°59’09.2″ North 18°35’04.6″ West.
The measurements were done via hi-res aerial images that were shot over a brief period of time. “Using this technique it is possible to measure Iceland’s size more precisely than before, additionally it will become easier to measure the shoreline in the future and map the changes accordingly,” read a statement from Loftmyndir.
