Route 1, Iceland’s national Ring Road that runs around the island, has been closed by Holtavörðuheiði in Borgarfjörður due to rising water levels, reports RÚV.
In addition to this, route 61 or Djúpvegur has also been closed after the road simply tore apart. As a result roughly 70 students traveling by bus on the road were forced to spend the night on their coach as road conditions in the area were considered too dangerous to attempt in the dark.
Bad weather was reported throughout the country yesterday and domestic airline, Flugfélag Íslands, was forced to cancel all of its flights.
According to local news source Skessuhorn, parts of Norðurárdalur have lost electricity and the Norðurá river is flooding.
