Twenty-six people have been murdered in Iceland since the year 2000, reports RÚV. In the majority of these cases the victims were related to their attackers or were acquainted with them in some way.
In the majority of the cases, men were the perpetrators. Out of the 26 cases since 2000, 21 of the murders were committed by men and only 5 by women.
The victims were similarly more often than not men, though the rate of female victims was certainly higher than the rate of female perpetrators.
Out of 26 cases, 17 of the victims were male and 9 were female.
According to data from the Icelandic Police Force, in 9 of the cases the victim knew or was friends with their attacker.
In 7 of the cases the victims and perpetrators did not know each other or at least not well, for a few hours at most.
In 5 of the cases the perpetrator was the victim’s spouse or had been.
In 4 cases the victims were related to their perpetrators and in one case, a former spouse attacked their ex’s new spouse.
