New data compiled by Statistics Iceland shows that Icelandic men live longer than any other European men, while European women trump them all.
According to their findings from data gathered in 2012, Icelandic men can expect to live 81.6 years. Their life expectancy has also increased by two years, up from just under 80 years in 2000.
This puts Icelandic men in the number one spot for longevity amongst European males, edging out Switzerland (80.6 years) and Sweden (79.9). The shortest life expectancies for European men were found in Lithuania (68.4), followed by Latvia (68.9) and Bulgaria (70.9).
Icelandic women still live longer than Icelandic men, with a life expectency of 84.3 years, and are in sixth place for longevity in both men and women in Europe. The longest-living women in Europe hail from Spain (85.5), closely followed by France (85.4) and Liechtenstein (85.2). European women with the shortest lives were found in Macedonia (76.9), Serbia (77.5) and Bulgaria (77.9).
In 2013, 2,154 people passed away in Iceland, or 1,091 men and 1,063 women. This makes 6.7 deaths for every 1,000 Icelanders, and also marks a slight increase from 2012.
