Police believe they have found the body of lawyer Ásta Stefánsdóttir in Bleiksárgljúfur gully, reports Vísir. Ásta went missing in early June while holidaying with her spouse Pino De Los Angeles Becerra Bolanos.
The couple were reported missing on Saturday, June 8, after they failed to return to their summerhouse in Fljótshlíð after a walk. This prompted an intensive search, with rescue workers covering territory on foot, with the aid of search dogs, and by helicopter.
As reported, Pino’s body was located by divers in Bleiksárgljúfur gully, about 25 kilometres from their summerhouse, after her clothes were found nearby. Officials believe the cause of death was drowning.
Rescue workers continued to search for Ásta but were forced to cut back on their efforts when she failed to turn up in the weeks that followed due to dangerous conditions in Bleiksárgljúfur gully.
Ásta and Pino’s relatives have released a statement thanking rescue workers for their efforts to locate the couple.
