Iceland Most Peaceful Country

Iceland World’s Most Peaceful Country (Again)

Published June 19, 2014

Iceland has once again come out on top as the world’s most peaceful country.

According to the latest results of the Global Peace Index (GPI), Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world out of a possible 162 other countries. Syria, by contrast, is the least peaceful.

The GPI estimates that violence in general costs Iceland about 11,948,994,862 ISK each year. Many facets of Icelandic society were examined to come up with the peace ranking, from things such as incidences of violent crime and political instability to levels of corruption and participation in war.

Iceland scored very low or lowest on all these categories, although public perception of the criminality of society was higher than the actual amount of criminality in the country.

This is not the first time Iceland has hit the top of the GPI. It achieved the same honour last year, and the year before that.

Where other major countries are concerned, the US ranked 101st on the GPI, the UK came out in the 47th spot, Japan was 8th, and Russia was 152nd.
