Nearly all Icelandair flights scheduled this coming Monday will be cancelled, due to a 24-hour work stoppage to be held by the Air Mechanics’ Union.
MBL reports that the work stoppage will last from 6:00 Monday until 6:00 the next day if no collective bargaining agreement is reached by that time. If it does go into effect, the work stoppage will mean the cancellation of 65 flights this Monday, or nearly every flight taking off and landing at Keflavík International Airport during this 24-hour period.
The only exceptions to this are Icelandair flights which depart from overseas on Monday afternoon and arrive in Iceland the following morning.
While negotiations between airplane mechanics and management are still ongoing, Icelandair told reporters that they decided to cancel the flights as a cautionary measure, to give people enough time to make other arrangements.
“We respectfully apologise to our customers for the great inconvenience that the strike causes,” said Guðjón Arngrímsson, a PR official for Icelandair, in a statement to the press. “We will do everything in our power to assist [our customers].”
This assistance will come in the form of making changes to flights for those scheduled to arrive in or depart from Keflavík International Airport during the work stoppage. Those who cannot make changes and opt instead to cancel their flights will have their tickets refunded. In addition, extra flights have been added to Tuesday’s schedule.
