The BBC have broadcast a radio programme about Iceland’s most notorious criminal case, the “Guðmundar- og Geirfinnsmál” (The Guðmundur and Geirfinnur Case).
The show, The Reykjavik Confessions on BBC Radio Four’s Crossing Continents, narrates how the case has developed over time from the first disappearance to what happened to those convicted of the two murders today.
The Guðmundar- og Geirfinnsmál has been a dark stain on Iceland’s police force and on the nation’s collective conscious. Following a review of the way police handled the case back in the ’70s it has come to light that the six suspects were tortured and subjected to extreme interrogation tactics which included solitary confinement of over 600 days in some cases.
To learn more about the case you can either listen to the BBC broadcast or read the story by Simon Cox in full.
