A man was arrested last night for riding an electric moped while under the influence of alcohol, and was charged with a crime that applies to bicycles and horses as well.
DV reports that the driver was spotted at about 3:00 on Laugavegur this morning, clearly under the influence and having trouble controlling his electric moped.
There is no specific Icelandic law about riding an electric moped under the influence. However, Article 45 of the General Traffic Law states “no one may ride a bicycle nor attempt to ride a bicycle, nor ride a horse nor attempt to ride a horse, under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substance”.
While not bicycles, mopeds are classified as such by Icelandic law. This means that, despite being able to achieve speeds of up to 25 KPH, they can be driven on the sidewalk. Also, they cannot be driven while drunk.
