This spring, the city of Reykjavík will rent out some 800 gardens for residents to grow their own vegetables.
An announcement on the city’s webpage states that 200 vegetable gardens will be available in Skammadal, a large collective gardening area near Mosfellsbær, as well as an additional 600 gardens in some Reykjavík neighbourhoods.
The gardens should be ready for planting by mid-May, and will also be available in Breiðholt, Árbær, Vesturbær, Fossvogur, Laugardal and Grafarvogur. Stakes, labels and of course water access will come with each plot, but potential gardeners will need to bring their own seeds and plants.
The monthly rent for a garden of 100m2 in Skammadal will cost 5,000 ISK, whilst 20m2 plots within city limits will cost 4,400 ISK. Those interested in applying for a garden can send an email to matjurtagardar@reykjavik.is. You might also want to check out the resources available at The Horticultural Society of Iceland.
