Matthias Brinkmann, EU Ambassador at the helm of the Delegation of the European Union to Iceland has said the EU is ready to talk if and when Iceland is ready to continue accession negotiations, reports Vísir.
Iceland’s Prime Minister, Sigmundur Davíð Gunnlaugsson said yesterday that when the ruling coalition announced the pause in accession negotiations last year, the EU responded by saying that they would need a concrete decision for or against soon after.
However, Brinkmann told Vísir earlier today that “the decision on what should happen regarding the future of Iceland’s membership application is entirely up to Iceland. The EU does not interfere in the Icelandic decision-making process. The EU would be ready to continue the accession negotiations if and when Iceland decides to do so, but will acknowledge whatever decision Iceland takes in the matter.”
