Baltasar Kormákur’s latest film, The Deep, has now been put on the shortlist for an Academy Award.
The Deep is based on the true story of the tragic voyage of an Icelandic fishing boat in 1984, and the incredible story of the sole survivor, Guðlaugur Friðþórsson. The film has been receiving critical acclaim, both at home and abroad, and was Iceland’s submission for the 2013 Academy Awards.
A statement to the press from agency PNK BNC now confirms that The Deep is on the short list for Best Foreign Language Film:

The shortlist was drawn from a record 71 submissions, and chosen by volunteers from across the Academy, who voted for their six favorite films, and by a 20-person executive committee that chose three additional films for the shortlist at a Thursday night meeting.
Two round-two committees, consisting of 20 members in Los Angeles and 10 in New York, will screen the nine shortlisted films over a three-day period in early January, and will select the five nominees.

Canada, “War Witch,” Kim Nguyen, director;
Chile, “No,” Pablo Larraín, director;
Denmark, “A Royal Affair,” Nikolaj Arcel, director;
France, “The Intouchables,” Olivier Nakache and Eric Toledano, directors;
Iceland, “The Deep,” Baltasar Kormákur, director;
Norway, “Kon-Tiki,” Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, directors;
Romania, “Beyond the Hills,” Cristian Mungiu, director;
Switzerland, “Sister,” Ursula Meier, director.
