Iceland was voted the favourite European country to visit by readers of the Guardian.
The 2012 Travel Awards for readers of the Guardian, Observer and guardian.co.uk have been announced. These are awards that span many categories, from the general to the specific.
As with most awards of this nature, winning in a broader category is higher-stakes than winning in a more narrow category. This year, Iceland has won the distinction of being the Best European Country to visit.
Iceland wins the crown this year, no doubt attracting visitors intrigued by all the footage of a landscape evolving and forming before our very eyes following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in 2010, whose ash cloud forced the closure of European airspace.
Following behind Iceland were Austria, Germany, Turkey and Greece, respectively.
