The award is in for Tree Of The Year 2012, and the winner is in Akureyri.
The Icelandic Forestry Association (IFA) gives the award every year to those trees that distinguish themselves among others. Most of Iceland’s trees consist of dwarf birch and various pines, so it comes as little surprise that, RÚV reports, this year’s winner was a grey poplar.
While grey poplars are commonly used as shade trees across Europe, they are rare in Iceland. This specimen hails from Brekkugata 8 in Akureyri, and received its award during a ceremony held in its honour yesterday.
Planted in the 1930s by Icelandic merchant Axel Kristjánsson, it now stands 13.55 metres tall.
