The case of an Icelandic yacht builder accused of forgery in Dubai has now been taken up by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
As reported, the Icelander in question had hoped to start his own yachting company. An Emirati had approached him, offering to sponsor the company if he built him a yacht first. The Icelander complied, but no documents to begin sponsorship ever came.
The Icelander in turn sued the Emirati, and the court found in his favour, awarding him Dh4m [about 130 million ISK]. However, the yacht maker was then charged with forging an official document he had used during the trial. The Icelander is free on bail, having paid the 2 million ISK bond and surrendered his passport.
RÚV now reports that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially taken up the case for processing. With the Icelander’s trial set to begin September 29, the ministry has mere weeks to intervene. Depending on the seriousness of the alleged forgery, the sentence can bring anywhere from a few months to a few years in prison.
