Hundreds of pilot whales where found trapped in a cove outside of Akranes this morning, but after a concerted volunteer effort from nearby Icelanders, they have all been sent back to sea.
RÚV reports that around two hundred pilot whales were trapped in the cove this morning. Fortunately, local whale watching boats arrived and helped herd most of the whales back out to sea. In the meantime, many locals gathered to witness the whales in action.
However, not all the whales initially made it out to sea. Vísir reports that three whales were stuck where they were, unable to maneuver themselves out to the ocean to join the others.
As luck would have it, two Icelanders – Stefán Þórðarson and Hermann Hermannsson – made their way into the cove, and physically moved the whales free, where they then swam out to sea.
