Reykjavík mayor Jón Gnarr, currently visiting the Faeroe Islands, took the opportunity to participate in the country’s Gay Pride march. LGBT rights in the Faeroe Islands remain lacking.
DV reports on Gnarr’s participation in the event, which should come as little surprise to those who remember his participation in Iceland’s Gay Pride march – as the DV photo attests.
Árni Grétar Jóhannsson, the managing director of LGBT rights group Samtök 78, told reporters that Gnarr’s taking part in the Faeroese Gay Pride march has important significance. LGBT rights in the Faeroe Islands are very lacking, Árni says, to where most LGBT Faeroese have opted to either stay in the closet or move to Denmark. A bill to increase LGBT rights was narrowly defeated in Faeroese parliament.
“The Faeroese are the closest people to us,” Árni says. “These are our brothers and sisters. It matters to gay people there that they have our support.”
Árni hopes and believes that Jón Gnarr’s participation in Gay Pride in the Faeroe Islands will have a positive influence on how Faeroese regard the rights of the LGBT community there.
