Presidential candidate Þóra Arnórsdóttir appears to be widening the gap between her and incumbent president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, a new poll shows.
As reported Ólafur went on the offensive last Monday while Þóra was taking a break from campaigning to give birth to her child. He accused her of being “dangerous” for Iceland and accused the media of showing a bias in her favor.
While Þóra has been leading over Ólafur for months now, this strategy may have given him an advantage, as a later poll showed him within two points of Þóra. This trend may have reversed, though, RÚV now reports.
Þóra is now about eight points ahead of Ólafur, according to a poll conducted by the Social Sciences department of the University of Iceland. Respondents were asked who they would vote for if presidential elections were being held today. Those who responded that they did not know were then asked what candidate was most likely to get their vote. Those who still answered that they did not know were then asked if they thought it was more likely that they would vote for Ólafur or some other candidate.
Of those asked three times, 46.2% said they would vote for Þóra while 37.8% said they would vote for Ólafur. All other candidates were well behind them both.
