The Youth Organisation of the Independence Party of Iceland (SUS) has offered double the amount the Visual Arts Centre in Akureyri paid for a plastic cup the Prime Minister drank from on a radio show.
As reported, Andri Freyr Viðarsson and Guðrún Dís Emilsdóttir, the hosts of the radio show Virkra morgna on Rás 2, held an auction for a plastic cup they found in their studio which was confirmed to have been used by the prime minister. In the end, the Visual Arts Centre in Akureyri placed the winning bid of 105,000 ISK, with all proceeds going to Umhyggja, a charity for chronically ill children.
RÚV now reports that SUS is offering the museum 210,000 ISK for the cup. Understanding why involves knowing a bit of Icelandic.
One of the words for a disposable cup, in Icelandic, is mál. This word also means “matter” or “issue”, as in an important subject or project. SUS contends that the cup is significant from an historical context, as it is the only “mál” that the Prime Minister has actually finished.
SUS’s offer stands until 16:00 on Monday. The museum has not as yet publicly responded to the offer.
