4G service will open up in Iceland in early 2013 at the latest.
Iceland has the highest per capita mobile phone use in the world. While many Icelanders buy their phones domestically, it is not uncommon for those shopping abroad to look for brands either cheaper than or unavailable in Iceland. 4G phones have been on the market for quite some time now, but Icelanders have not been able to take full advantage of them, due to the lack of such service in their home country.
The Post and Telecom Administration in Iceland now reports that they will begin offering 4G service in Iceland in late 2012 or early next year. The frequencies 800 MHz and 1800 MHz will be the first to be put into operation, with more to follow soon thereafter.
4G is fairly new to the world outside of North America, but 4G service did begin in the UK last February, and other countries in the world plan to start offering the service soon, too.
4G refers to the fourth generation of mobile phone communication standards. It promises faster and stronger broadband connections, with possible applications including high definition mobile TV and 3D television.
