The Road Traffic Directorate believes that it is dangerous for passengers to be standing in a bus when traveling outside of the capital, and have taken their concerns to the Ministry of the Interior.
As many are aware, the municipal bus system of the capital area now extends as far north as Akranes and as far east as Selfoss. However, RÚV reports, the Road Traffic Directorate is concerned that people are standing up while the bus is in motion outside the capital. Their worries are great enough for them to take the matter up with the Ministry of the Interior.
Einar Magnús Magnússon, speaking on behalf of the directorate, told reporters that outside the capital area, the bus is traveling at much higher speeds on an open highway, making it very dangerous for passengers to be standing. He says that numerous complaints have been made expressing worry for the safety of the passengers on the bus.
While emphasising proceeding with caution, Einar said that it is hope that, by taking the matter to the ministry, some sort of regulations will be put in place with regards to bus travel outside the capital area. Standing while on the bus on the open highway is not a violation of any traffic law currently on the books, but for safety reasons, Einar hopes that this will change.
