Budget airline EasyJet, expected to begin their first flights to and from Iceland next month, have decided to broaden their game plan for the country.
As reported, last November EasyJet announced that they would be flying to and from Iceland and the UK, with the first flight due to arrive March 27. With late flights and cancellations at Iceland Express becoming so problematic that at times damages have been awarded, the public response to the news was very positive.
Paul Simmons, EasyJet’s UK director, said at the time, “It is hugely exciting to be able to offer EasyJet flights to Iceland for the very first time. Our new route will not only be attractive for business travelers, but also for those looking for culture-rich city breaks or adventurous travelers looking for unrivaled scenery and activities.”
The response from the public, in terms of bookings, has been so strong in fact that now RÚV reports that what was initially an experiment for the summer has been expanded – EasyJet will be offering flights to and from the UK and Iceland through the winter as well.
Another contributing factor, according to EasyJet spokesperson Hugh Aitken, has been increased competition. Not only does Iceland Express fly to and from the UK but also Icelandair and the newly formed WOW Air.
