From Iceland — Media In Speculation Mode Over Possible New Presidential Candidates

Media In Speculation Mode Over Possible New Presidential Candidates

Published January 5, 2012

The Icelandic media has begun the process of seeking out possible candidates to run for president this year, and continue to solicit the opinions of readers over who should run.
As reported, current president Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson insinuated in his New Year’s Day address that he would not run for office again this year. This has led to much speculation in the media over who will might run for the office.
A reader’s poll conducted by DV asked participants to name some people they would like to see run for president. Among those mentioned – and who came in third in the poll, at 12.9% – was former Prime Minister, former Central Bank manager, and current Morgunblaðið editor Davíð Oddsson.
DV contacted Davíð to ask him if he would run for the office, to which he replied, “No, I haven’t considered it. Wrapped up in other things.” This was interpreted as Davíð Oddsson having not given a definite answer to the question, and therefore having not ruled out running for office.
Vísir is currently running an online poll asking readers to choose who they would like to see run office. Voting is tracked by IP address and can only be done once. Of the people on the list, only Jón Gnarr has said he is even considering running for president.
At the time of this writing, no one has yet seriously stepped forward with the intention to run for the office.
