A man taken into police custody in Selfoss says he remembers almost nothing of the 24 hours before his arrest, due to his eating Icelandic hallucinogenic mushrooms.
The incident in question took place in the south Iceland town last Sunday, Vísir reports. Police were called to an apartment that evening, as neighbours suspected that there was someone in the apartment who should not be there. The actual occupant was supposedly on vacation.
When police arrived on the scene, they found a naked man asleep on the couch in the living room of the apartment. Police woke the man, but he was not able to account for how he got into the apartment, what he did once inside, or really anything from the 12 hours prior to his falling asleep. At this point, the suspect revealed that he had eaten Icelandic hallucinogenic mushrooms.
The suspect was arrested, charged with breaking and entering, as well as drug violations. More mushrooms were found in his possession, which were then sent to a lab for testing.
Hallucinogenic mushrooms grow wild in Iceland, and are typically picked in late summer to early autumn. As they do contain psilocybin, they are illegal to pick, own, sell or consume.
