City police will be holding a demonstration march downtown today to bring more attention to their labour demands. The capital area riot police, the majority of whom voted to walk yesterday, are now understaffed and unable to function.
As reported, police have been in negotiations with the government over a pay raise, at times holding their own demonstrations to bring public attention to their cause. Unfortunately, Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir has said that the government does not have the funds to raise police salaries.
Vísir now reports that capital area police will stage a demonstration march, beginning at the police station at Hlemmur, and extending to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, at 14:00 today.
As members of riot squads in some smaller municipalities have walked, the riot squad in the capital area have now followed suit, with the vast majority voting yesterday to walk off the job.
Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson has assured the public that a solution in the matter will be found.
