Officials within the Best Party are now seriously looking at their options for a parliamentary bid, and the party could prove a real contender.
As reported, results of the latest Gallup poll show that 9% said they were ready to vote for a party other than the five currently in parliament. About 18% of those responding to a poll conducted by news aggregate site Eyjan said they intended to vote for another party.
This historically large amount of voters ready to vote for a new party has apparently been noticed by officials for the Best Party, as they are now examining their chances for a parliamentary run.
The Best Party also gained confidence for a run in light of a poll conducted by Market and Media Research, which showed Reykjavík mayor Jón Gnarr’s popularity at 38.3% which, despite being down from 77.6% this time last year, is still higher than many members of government.
If the Best Party does run for parliament, it seems more likely to draw voters from the left than the right, which could end up bringing down the current leftist ruling coalition – or strengthening it.
Official campaigning has yet to begin.
