Of the 17 individuals who tested HIV+ this year, three of them are now said to have reached the point of exhibiting the symptoms of AIDS.
Haraldur Briem, the Chief Epidemiologist of Iceland, was quite frankly surprised by the results.
“It is a little unusual that three have acquired AIDS now, which is the final stage of the disease and means that they have had it a long time. These are three heterosexual individuals, well into their middle age and not drug users.”
Medical authorities in Iceland have recently shown increased interest in combating HIV on the drug front, as many of the newer cases of HIV have involved intravenous drug users.
“People who have even the slightest worry that they may have exposed themselves to HIV should get tested,” added Haraldur. “And I remind people to use a condom.”
