Former Minister of Justice Björn Bjarnason believes that in light of recent events in Oslo, Iceland needs to establish a secret service agency.
This is not the first time Björn has raised the idea. In fact, he has long been an advocate of an Icelandic secret service and even an Icelandic military.
In the wake of the terrorist attack that devastated Norway last Friday, Björn wasted no time in taking the opportunity to raise the idea again.
Writing on his website, Björn points out that Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir recently told reporters that her government will, in the wake of the Oslo attacks, seek to increase security in Iceland. Björn believes the best way to do so would be to establish a secret service agency. He also contends that Minister of the Interior Ögmundur Jónasson could lead the operation.
Björn also says that the terrorist who carried out the attacks had put forth numerous extreme opinions but, not having any criminal record, he never gained the attention of the police. Björn believes that if he had been monitored more closely, it could have been possible to see what he was planning to do.
