Reykjavík mayor Jón Gnarr accepted a petition from a group of parents against the possible merger of several city schools.
The proposal before city council right now would merge many playschools and grade schools together. This has been met with considerable resistance from city parents, as Grapevine reported last week.
The petition, given to the mayor yesterday, bears the signatures of some 11,000 people, RÚV reports. The mayor told those present that he has not ruled out the possibility of changing the proposal in some way. As it is, the proposal is a cost-saving measure for the already badly cash-strapped city.
When asked how he responds to criticism he received for being abroad while the proposal was debated, Gnarr said, “That’s just nonsense. I wasn’t showing any people [the documentary on his political career]. This was a trip that had been long decided, and I see nothing remarkable about me going, nothing at all. These are tough times and there will be tough times ahead, but I’m going to take a vacation anyway – I have to do so in order to continue this work.”
