From Iceland — Around The World At Reykjavik University

Around The World At Reykjavik University

Published February 22, 2011

The International Department of Reykjavik University is having their annual International Day on campus today from 11:00 – 13:00. The event is hosted by students from countries around the world setting up booths to shed light on their nation’s culture. Several embassies will also participate in the event, as well as several third parties representing their countries. Booths will offer a small sample of their nation’s culture, including traditional food or music.
Shishir Patel, a member of the university’s International Commitee and one of the event’s organizers says the goal of the event is to encourage Icelandic students to study abroad. “Many Icelandic students don’t study abroad just because they haven’t been exposed to other cultures.” He hopes events like this change all that. “This year we expect about 130 people attending, and each year it has been getting bigger and bigger.”
Margret Jónsdóttir Njarðvik, Director of International Studies, says since 2007, “the number of students studying abroad has more than doubled.” There are almost 200 students from 25 different countries currently studying at the university, and more than 100 Icelandic students studying abroad.  Margret says that International Day helps students understand how experience abroad gives them a competitive advantage in the work force.
