The organisers of the online petition calling for a stop of the sale of HS Orka and for a national referendum on public ownership of natural resources will be taking their message directly to the Prime Minster in the form of song – and everyone is invited.
The petition has so far gained 48,000 signatures, or over 15% of the nation. So far, both Prime Minister Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir and Minister of Industry Katrín Júlíusdóttir have told the press that it is the policy of the government that the country’s natural resources be in public ownership, and that any profit generated from their use go directly to the people. In the spirit of this platform, they have invited the petition organisers to a meeting.
The organisers plan to make this a memorable event. In a statement to the press, they say the following:
Monday 17th of January at 10:00 the Icelandic Government has invited the initiators of the petition at orkuaudlindir.is to a meeting at the Government Offices in Lækjargata (it’s Stjórnarráðið, the old house across the main square, with statues in front).
The initiators now kindly ask everyone that agrees upon the petition lines: -that people in Iceland should get their energy resources back- to meet in front of this Stjórnarráð-house -if possible to get away from work at this time- and sing with us: We’ll troll the petition the the Government ! The song is simple: Sá ég spóa…(I did see a Whimbrel!) and ends with an alarming bird-noise: Bí, bí, bí, bí… to remind of the spring ! This song will be sung in a troll; one takes up the tune from another, so the song can continue around the country!
