The diplomatic cables between the US embassy in Reykjavík and the US State Department have been now made available for public viewing on Wikileaks.
Most of the documents available on the database are, perhaps not surprisingly, labelled as “unclassified” or “confidential” – there are no extraordinary bombshells to be found, as has been reported in the past month. In fact, the only cable to come out of the Reykjavík US embassy that is labeled “secret” is a one-year review of Iceland since the NATO base’s departure.
Wikileaks has been a hot topic in the Icelandic media, especially as the US Justice Department’s demand that Twitter hand over information about its users who have worked with Wikileaks – among them, Icelandic MP Birgitta Jónsdóttir – has gained a great deal of attention and public sympathy for Birgitta.
Icelandic WikiLeaks spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson told the media last month that while the site has been undergoing constant DDOS attacks, they are resolved to stay online.
Public support for Wikileaks remains high, and even government officials have focused most of their outrage on the things revealed in the cables rather than the release of the cables themselves.
